One person was killed and another left another seriously injured after a smash happened on the A166 York to Driffield road, between Garrowby Hill and Fridaythorpe, at about 7.40pm.
The impact of the crash left both vehicles, a dark blue Citroen Picasso and a silver Ford Focus, next to the crash barrier on the same side of the road, heading towards Bridlington.
Humberside fire service sent four fire engines to the scene.
The drivers of both vehicles had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters.
One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to York District Hospital by ambulance, suffering from injuries to his lower legs. An ambulance spokeswoman said: "There was one fatality and one person was seriously injured. No one else was involved in the accident."
