I HAVE read the article The Press regarding City of York Council’s idea of helping our market traders to make a living in this present climate (Night move for market, March 29).

What a stupid idea. Who does their shopping in the market at night?

York market should be back where it belongs, in Parliament Street. All other markets should be in Newgate. Better still, why not use the empty former Boots or Borders stores for an indoor market?

Ask York traders and York citizens what they would like. York is the only city I know who has no indoor market.

• A City of York Council spokeswoman said: “Relocating the market stalls to Parliament Street would detract from the street’s appeal to visitors and residents and reduce the flexibility if its use.

“However, the whole issue of York Market is being considered as part of the city centre area action plan, and this will ultimately determine the market location and future.

“The idea of using the Newgate area at night is to encourage better use of the space in the evening once trading hours have finished. This idea is also being considered as part of the city centre action plan.

“There is also a review ongoing through scrutiny which will consider effective ways in which newgate market can be developed. We need to consider the outcome from this prior to making any decisions.”
