Visit York has asked schoolchildren to compete to have their work displayed at its new tourism information centre, which opens this spring.

More than 100 schools have been asked to draw, sketch or paint their favourite thing to do or day out in Yorkshire, the best of which will be displayed at the centre.

The overall winner will also receive an all-expenses paid family day out in York and £100 worth of book vouchers for their school.

Second and third place finalists will win a Yorkshire Pass, a regional tourism pass that gives free entry to more than 70 attractions. Ten runners-up will win further offers on visitor attractions.

Visit York is moving out of its current De Grey Rooms location into a grade II-listed building in Museum Street, which is being restored by York Conservation Trust. Chris Morton, manager of the new centre, said the project was taking shape and she was excited to involve local pupils.

She said: “I think that seeing the winning pupil’s work will be a lovely touch for locals and tourists to see when they are thinking of what to do in the city or region, as well as possibly discovering Yorkshire’s budding artists of the future.”
