York FA under-17s’ representative squad beat their Scarborough counterparts 3-0 to retain the Tony Aveyard Trophy and win it for the ninth year in a row.

In difficult windy conditions, the visitors were first to threaten with a shot from distance which Tom Young in the York goal had covered as it went past an upright.

York then took control and opened the scoring when a corner was only cleared to Tom Derbyshire.

He took one touch and hit a 25-yard screamer past a helpless Scarborough goalkeeper.

The lead was doubled when Dan Butterworth crossed to the far post to Johnny Sellars who controlled the ball quickly and fired in from 12 yards.

York started the second half on top and after good possession went 3-0 up.

In a fluent, length of the pitch move, the ball was played from the back to Adam Thornton who laid a great pass into the path of the speedy Butterworth.

He raced past the full-back to shoot into the far corner again leaving the Scarborough ’keeper with no chance.

As the dominance continued, York denied Scarborough any clear-cut chances to reply.

Manager Bob Stuart was very happy with the performance of the squad.

He said: “We passed the ball well and kept possession until we found an opening.”
