YORK City juniors’ Football League Youth Alliance North East Conference title hopes were dealt a huge blow after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to close rivals Chesterfield.

The Minstermites went ahead on 25 minutes when left-winger Jed Vale, pictured, whose blistering pace tormented the home side throughout the early exchanges, flashed an inviting ball across the face of goal to panic a Chesterfield defender, who put through his own net.

A blood injury that saw City temporarily reduced to ten men enabled the Spireites to make their numerical advantage count with an equaliser that squirmed under the body of visiting goalkeeper Ben White.

Despite second-half chances for Nick Thompson, Adam Scorfield and Dom Brown, Chesterfield then grabbed all three points five minutes from time.

As the ball dropped on the edge of the penalty-box, City centre-back Ryan Qualter made a superb block but the scorer of Chesterfield’s first goal then added his second of the game with a well-controlled finish from 18 yards.
