ROCK-STEADY play got Simon Dyson back into the likely reckoning of making the cut for the Shell Houston Open ahead of next week’s Masters.

Dyson was in deficit after the first round at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas, after firing a one-over par 73 that included a double-bogey six on the par-four 11th.

But as one of the early starters in yesterday’s second round, Dyson showed the scrambling skill and consistency that could prove invaluable on his debut at Augusta next week.

After three pars, Dyson found the water on the fourth hole to drop a shot.

However, by the turn he was level for the day with a birdie on the ninth.

A solid run of pars followed before he got another shot back on the 608-yard par-five 15th.

The 32-year-old then displayed icy nerve on the very last hole.

After sending his approach shot on the par-four 18th through the green and into the rough 20 yards beyond the flag, the Malton & Norton GC ace lofted his third shot to within three foot of the hole for a successful putt for par.

That yielded him a one-under-par 71 that left him level at the midway point.

With the projected cut being at one-over, Dyson was looking like getting a full four rounds in Houston before leaving for next week’s huge date with Masters destiny.
