York Acorn Under-10s and New Earswick U10s gave a fantastic advert for junior rugby league in the city in a thrilling game the All Blacks edged 34-32.
The speedy Jimmy Piggot scored five tries and a goal, Josh Ireland a try and goal, and Mathew Williams and Harvey Baynes a goal apiece.
Thomas Noble was Acorn’s man of the match and Adam Winter Rhodes their most improved player. Acorn’s team player award went to Ewen Coverdale who worked his socks off.
Kieran Levers and Owen Levers were the men of the match as York Acorn U11s beat Dudley Hill 30-18.
Acorn started brightly with two quick tries, and good ball handling and team work saw them lead 18-6 at half-time.
Acorn then reverted to one-man rugby allowing Dudley Hill to come back to 18-12 and, after a Reece Maynard individual try, to 24-18.
But good defence kept the Bradford side out thereafter and a further try sealed victory.
Maynard finished with two tries, with Owen Levers, Dalton Brolly, top tackler Thomas Atkin and Jack Wyard also crossing.
Conversions were added by Maynard, Nathan Shepherd and Owen Levers. The coaches’ player of the match was Aron Machin.
Arron McBride’s power-packed display helped Heworth U10s complete a quick double over Garforth Tigers with a 36-6 win.
McBride scored two tries and was solid in defence.
Stand-off Sam Young crashed over after a flowing seven-man to set them on their way. Other try-scorers were Keiren Costanzo, touching down Shay North’s clever grubber kick and, as pivots Young and North stretched the defence, the impressive Harry Sheppeard scored two and Josh Rogerson maintained his record of scoring in every fixture so far.
Acting-half Andrew Errington won the team player award.
Heworth U8s stepped up a division and were unlucky to lose four tries to three to an indisciplined Milford Marlins.
Leon Mooring powered over from close range and the determined Austin Cole scored a try on his debut. Jak Ostergaard also crossed and was unlucky later when losing the ball over the line.
Myles Harrison provided the magic moment with a try-saving tackle and Kian Oliver was man of the match for some great defence ably backed by Jay Richards and Jensen Brown.
New Earswick U11s went down 30-16 at home to Drighlington in Yorkshire League division two.
The visitors led 12-6 at the break, with the All Blacks’ try coming from Jake Goodall, with Dom Judge adding the extras.
New Earswick hit back with a second try by Goodhall, with Conor Calam converting. While Drig got three more tries, Ben Husband touched down for All Blacks.
Calam took the top tackler award, with the tackle of the match going to Goodhall. Man of the match was Husband.
