THE Tornado steam locomotive returned to York, as part of a tour of the North East.
The engine, the first new main-line steam locomotive to have been built in Britain for almost 50 years, took passengers on the Tyne-Tees Tornado excursion from York to Newcastle, then back to her Darlington birthplace before moving on to be displayed at the National Railway Museum’s site in Shildon until May 5.
Transport history charity the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust built the £3m Tornado in 2008, after 18 years of planning, construction and fundraising.
The Tornado hauled her first mainline passenger train in January last year.
She also starred in an episode of the hit TV show Top Gear, in a race from London to Edinburgh against a Jaguar XK120 car and a Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle.
