THIS grandmother will be celebrating her 100th birthday today with a party with the help of a civic guest.

The Lord Mayor of York, Coun John Galvin, will be among the guests helping celebrate Gertrude Mellor’s 100th birthday.

Mrs Mellor, known as Gertie, lives at Woolnough House care home, in Tang Hall, where staff and residents are putting on a party for her today.

Born in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, Mrs Mellor, has been living at the care home since January.

She said she met her husband, Stanley, at a dance and the two were married happily for 64 years.

They had one son, Kenneth, and she has two grandsons.
