THE Guilds of York have been set a challenge over this picture, which captures the scene when the Mystery Plays were performed in York in June 1963.
The Guilds, which will be staging the plays again on the backs of wagons this summer, said it was sent the photo by a former actor who took part in the plays in 1963.
Roger Jubinville, of Toronto, Canada, said it shows three young actors on the back of a wagon moving between performances. “I was one of them, sitting on the left, and the other, standing, was my friend John Shaw,” he said.
“I don’t know who the other person, sitting on the right, was. We were students at Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School at the time, but lost contact for 42 years when I moved to Canada and his family moved away.”
Roger Lee, of the Guilds, appealed for anyone who could identify the mystery actor to come forward. “There have been so many performances of the plays since then, but as local people are always part of the spectacle of the plays, we are sure someone will be able to identify an old friend or relative.”
