CALGARY band Woodpigeon are labelled as indie folk, but there’s more to Mark Hamilton’s brainchild. The eight-piece combo may feature violins and accordions, but never in your face.
This isn’t folk music; it is lush, grandiose and majestic. Die Stadt Muzikanten is Hamilton’s first concept album and was written during a stay in Berlin. It flows effortlessly and has the ethereal quality of Ibiza chill-out with fine harmonies, rich, almost orchestral, arrangements and a hint of melancholy.
Hamilton’s dreamy vocals and the sweeping accompaniments defy labelling, but if you must compare them, Spiritualized springs to mind; not for the music, but in their ethos. Jason Pierce has a hang-it-all approach and Woodpigeon are similarly brave enough to try something different and just see what happens. Add this fine album to your collection.
