YORK Schoolboys Under-13s secured a famous triumph when beating Leeds and Liverpool to take the three team Carnegie Cup at Leeds Metropolitan University.
In their opening match against their West Yorkshire rivals, York had to survive strong early pressure with Henry Swires clearing off the line and Joe Ferguson making a string of last-ditch tackles.
Level at the break, York started the second period brightly and seized their opportunity with a cool Harvey Rowson-Jeffrey finish.
Leeds responded with concerted pressure but man-of-the-match Nigel Holland starred in a defence which would not be breached.
York faced the competition favourites, Liverpool, in their second game.
The tag looked valid as Liverpool swept into an early lead following a swift five-man move.
York responded very well and took the game to their illustrious opponents – levelling the score with a brilliant free-kick from Dylan Howlett which dropped between ’keeper and bar.
With the scores locked at 1-1 at half-time, Tom Robinson collected an Adam Swords pass shortly after the break and finished in clinical fashion.
Howlett then completed a memorable hat-trick with two more great strikes to secure a 4-1 victory and the man-of-the-match award.
Captain Evan Tyson collected the trophy and York resume league action this week with a trip to Warrington.
