THE widow of former Lord Mayor of York Jack Archer has died at the age of 87.

Ena Archer, who would have been 88 tomorrow, passed away at York Hospital yesterday morning.

Her death comes only two months after she lost her husband Jack, who twice served as Lord Mayor and was also chairman of Age Concern York as well as founding Older Citizens’ Advocacy York and being president of York Blind and Partially Sighted Society. He died on March 2 at the age of 90.

The couple were married for 66 years and their daughter Brenda said: “Through all my dad’s work, she was always a great support to him and all his activities as well as being a great mum, and she was extremely proud to be Lady Mayoress twice.”

Mrs Archer, who lived at South Bank Care Home in Gale Lane, Acomb, served in the Army and was a former Rowntrees worker.

Her funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
