Selby’S new MP says his top priority is to bring jobs to the district.
Conservative Nigel Adams took the town seat with a huge majority, polling 25,562 compared to his nearest rival, Labour’s Jan Marshall who received 13,297 votes.
Speaking shortly after his victory was announced, he said: “I’m absolutely elated. I always thought we were in with a good chance, but to get a majority of over 12,000 is absolutely stunning but we’ve worked really hard.
“To be elected for my home seat is a wonderful feeling and to top it off Yorkshire are at the top of the county championship so it does not get much better than that.
“The major priority for this constituency is jobs. Since 1997 we’ve seen unemployment rise; there’s nothing worse than losing your job, I’ve gone through it myself so I know how it can affect families. “Governments don’t create jobs, entrepreneurs, businesses and small businesses in particular create jobs.
“We have to create the conditions to help entrepreneurs thrive in this district. At the moment the Labour Government is on your back and we have to reverse that.
“We need to stop carrying clipboards and ticking boxes and let people grow their businesses.”
Mr Adams said he intended to celebrate tomorrow and planned to hold two surgeries today, one in Selby and one in Tadcaster although times and places are still to be confirmed.
There was a high turnout in the Selby and Ainsty constituency with 71 per cent of the 72,790-strong electorate turning out to vote.
In third place came Tom Holvey for the Liberal Democrats with 9,180 votes, followed by Darren Haley for UKIP with 1,635, Duncan Lorriman for the BNP with 1,377 and finally Graham Glynn for the English Democrats with 677.
