UNBEATEN York boxer Matt Doyle hailed his vocal travelling support after clinching a third successive professional triumph.

The 26-year-old Heworth fighter out-pointed Gavin Putney 59-55 over six two-minute rounds at Hull’s Gemtec Arena.

Having sold more than 40 tickets for the show, Doyle was delighted at the backing he received.

“The crowd were amazing,” he said. “I could hear them before I came out into the arena and I think he was a bit intimidated. They were fantastic and really spurred me on.”

Luton-based Putney, 32, had won one and lost two of three previous bouts, but he was no match for Doyle as he extended his 100 per cent pro record.

Doyle, from the York stable of trainer Glen Banks, had to overcome two late changes of opponent, with Mansoor Wali and then Luke Gallear pulling out of the fight.

However, Doyle admitted he was helped by a bit of inside knowledge on his eventual foe.

“I knew somebody who had sparred with Putney before, so I got a bit of an insight,” he said. “I heard he had a good jab.

“It was a good fight. He had fast feet and fast hands, but my constant pressure paid off.

“It was a great experience because he was a totally different style of fighter to the last guy I boxed. That will all help me in the future.”

He added: “My record is three wins out of three now and I am beginning to feel more and more comfortable. I looking forward to some more exciting fights.”

Next on the agenda for Doyle could be a step up to four three-minute rounds from six twos.
