A YORK woman is holding an evening of entertainment to raise funds for a charity trip.
Karen Heaton, of Monkgate, York, is travelling to China in October to take part in a five-day trek along the Great Wall.
Karen, 29, is making the trip to raise funds for the Deanne Gee Memorial Fund, which helps provide specialist equipment for children with disabilities.
“I have worked as a physiotherapy assistant for nine-and-a-half years, carrying out physiotherapy with children with disabilities at schools and the child development centre at York hospital. This is how I got involved with the charity,” she said.
To raise money for the trek Karen has arranged a charity night at Maxi’s Chinese restaurant in York on Wednesday, May 26.
“Tickets cost £18 and that includes a three-course meal, a disco, and table magician,” said Karen.
“I’ve also arranged for the Hands And Voices singing and signing choir to perform. I’m hoping to sell 200 tickets because that will mean we get the whole place to ourselves, and we’ve already sold 120,” said Karen.
The trip in October will see Karen and other volunteers trek more than 50 miles along sections of the wall and spend a night in a reconstructed fortress.
“I’m training at the gym a few times a week before work and walking to the White Horse at Kilburn or round the city walls on a weekend,” she said.
