A YORK nightclub is bidding to stay open later despite anger from people living nearby.

Luminar Gems Limited, which runs The Gallery in Clifford Street, has applied to extend the times it can serve alcohol to revellers by an hour and to stay open by half-an-hour seven days a week.

The club currently keeps the bars in its main dancefloor and basement zones open until 3am and in its VIP lounge until 3.30am.

On Thursday, a City of York Council licensing and gambling hearing will consider the request to push the serving time for all those areas back to 4am, with the club closing 30 minutes later.

But objections to the application have been sent in by residents living near The Gallery, who say allowing it to stay open later will add to noise and trouble in the area.

The club’s owners previously applied for a similar extension to its licence in 2008.

The venue’s position within York’s Cumulative Impact Zone, which gives police extra opportunity to make their views known about applications for new licences and changes to existing ones, will influence the council’s decision.

Among the objections submitted ahead of Thursday’s meeting was a letter from Jacquie Sleven, assistant warden at the nearby Quaker Meeting House in Friargate, who said: “The noise of music and drunken behaviour on Clifford Street and Friargate is already a disgrace to York and an appalling disturbance.”

Another resident wrote: “The proposed extension of hours will make the area noisier due to people being attracted into and retained in this area later into the night.”

Luminar Gems has said CCTV will cover all areas of The Gallery, including its smoking terrace, and it will have enough door staff to ensure safety with entry into the club ending at 3am and no more than 775 people being allowed inside at a time.
