SENIOR York Liberal Democrats have backed Nick Clegg’s efforts to reach a deal with the Conservatives – but disagreed over the importance of winning an absolute commitment to proportional representation.
Christian Vassie, a councillor who was the Lib Dem candidate for York Central last week, said he believed electoral reform was key to any deal, claiming: “This nation has waited long enough for a fair voting system.”
Council leader Andrew Waller said the priority would be to make Britain a fairer society and help the country back out of the recession, while dealing with massive levels of public debt in a controlled way.
Meanwhile, York’s Labour MP Hugh Bayley has backed Gordon Brown’s decision to stand down as Prime Minister and Labour leader, saying: “The voters have given their verdict on Gordon.” He said, at the moment, he would prefer Foreign Secretary David Milliband to take over as Labour leader.
