I REFER to a recent letter which suggested the council is not listening to the regular market traders in York.
I am not a market trader, but I have seen the effects the specialist markets in Parliament Street have on Newgate Market. People mill around the stalls on Parliament Street and I do not think half of them realise there is a regular market behind. Unfortunately, the spokesperson for the council only confirmed its lack of dialogue with the market traders when they used the word ‘hoped’ in their response.
Surely if the council were talking to traders, it would actually know whether the traders benefited from the council bringing in these other markets.
Personally, I think the council should move the regular traders in to Parliament Street and put the specialist markets at the back. Maybe then they would have an honest comparison.
