ROWERS pulled together and raised hundreds of pounds for charity by completing an 18-hour challenge in York city centre.
Members of the York St John University Rowing Club took to rowing machines in St Sampson’s Square to boost the coffers of Help For Heroes by £640. Psychology student Lloyd Frith, who is the incoming secretary of the club, said: “A couple of members are from military backgrounds and because it was VE Day on Saturday it made sense to do it for Help For Heroes. We were amazed by the generosity of the public. We were aiming to raise a couple of hundred pounds so we’re staggered to have raised so much.”
Eighteen members of the club each rowed for an hour to complete 10,000 miles.
