POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a vicious assault in York city centre.

The attack began in St Saviourgate at about 3.30am on Monday and continued into The Stonebow.

Two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries and two others arrested.

One of the victims has serious face injuries.

Detective Constable John Phillips of North Yorkshire Police said said the trouble started when a group of revellers approached another group of men who were waiting at the taxi rank in St Saviourgate at about 3.30am on Monday.

He said: “It was an extremely vicious attack – one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen."
