A MAN suffered two broken arms as he tried to protect his friend from thugs who were kicking their victim as he lay unconscious on the ground.

The detective investigating the assault in York city centre described the attack as one of the worst he had encountered and appealed for help in bringing the offenders to justice.

Detective Constable John Phillips said the trouble started when a group of revellers approached another group of men who were waiting at the taxi rank in St Saviourgate at about 3.30am on Monday.

He said: “Both groups had been drinking and that has fuelled it. I expect there were a few choice words, but it has not been confirmed what has started it.

“It was an extremely vicious attack – one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen.

“It’s not often you get someone with both of his arms broken. It seems this person was purely trying to cover his friend who was lying unconscious on the ground.

“He has spread himself over his friend to try and protect him as the offender was kicking at him. It is horrendous.”

The two victims, one aged 22 and one aged 18, were taken to York Hospital.

Det Con Phillips said the 18-year-old suffered serious injuries to his face, including bruising and a cut that required several stitches, while the 22-year-old had two broken arms.

He appealed for anybody who was in the area at the time and saw the incident to come forward.

He also urged anyone who did not necessarily witness the attack, but knows who the offenders are to get in touch with the police.

An 18-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, both from York, were arrested by police at the scene in connection with the incident.

They have since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
