YORK Badminton League men’s division one champions RI Monday/Wednesday ‘A’ finished their season on a high note when they beat RI Tues/Thurs ‘A’ 8-1.
Paul Turner and Mike Poulter were best for the league leaders with three straight wins for 128-100. Loz Smith and Chris Wan stopped the whitewash with a 16-21, 21-10, 21-18 success over Mike Corley and Nick Brodie.
Riverside made it nine wins from 13 with an 8-1 home victory over a depleted Clifton ‘B’.
Craig Dobson and Andy Newby top-scored for the home team with a return of 126-37. Steve Colley and Peter Minikin picked up the consolation with a 21-14, 11-21, 21-16 win over Nigel Stainforth and Ian McInlay.
Clifton ‘A’ ended their season with a comprehensive 9-0 home win over Selby/Drax ‘A’.
Daniel Woolfson and Erik Wagenaars kept up their good understanding in the opening pair role. They ended the final match with a total of 126-40 taken in straight games.
St John’s completing a division two double over Selby Jubilee ‘A’ with a 7-2 success.
Craig Middleton and Ian Waters were in tremendous form for the new university side, returning a total of 126-69 from straight wins.
Martin Overton and James Barrett took both Jubilee wins in a gritty display but were well beaten 15 and 12 by Middleton and Waters.
Shepherds, fighting for safety, helped their cause with a fine 6-3 home win over Clifton ‘C’.
Paul Nichol and James Pearson topped the home averages with three straight wins for 126-94, while Simon Christian and Dave Woods were best for the visitors.
Clifton ‘A’ took second place in ladies division one just behind RI Mon/Tues ‘A’ after a 9-0 home win over Selby/Drax ‘A’. Karen Broster and Lucy Smith hit top form for a return of 126-51.
Shepherds followed 8-1 and 5-4 mixed division one wins over Selby/Drax ‘A’ and Clifton ‘C’ respectively with a 9-0 defeat at second-placed Clifton ‘A’.
Erik Wagenaars and Gill McIntosh topped the Clifton ‘A’ returns with a total of 126-63.
In both Shepherd victories, James Pearson and Lisa McClaren excelled to take maximums for a six-rubber total of 292-234.
