North Yorkshire motorbike ace Robin McNeil is revving up a storm in his rookie season in the Auto 66 Formula 600 Championship.
McNeil, 36, of Thorganby, is currently at the top of the standings after three race days and has high hopes his current form will continue all the way through to the season-ending meeting at Cadwell in October.
With 25 years of riding experience it is no surprise to see McNeil performing well on his debut.
The turf and lawn specialist started his motorcycling passion trialing at track days many moons ago.
Clocking consistent times in the top five per cent led McNeil to “give racing a go”.
The Auto 66 club Formula 600 Championship is held throughout the summer on 11 different race days at Cadwell Park, Mallory Park and Elvington Park, near York.
As well as leading the way in the Formula 600 Championship, McNeil is second out of the Rookies 600 and third in the Super 2 championship, despite missing one of the championship weekends.
He said: “My best performances have come at Cadwell Park.
“I have been consistently placed within the top four in races that offer the strongest competition.
“There is not quite as much competition at Elvington.”
He added: “The season had been going really well.
“In the first 21 races from the three race days I have not been out of the top four.”
The early success has seen McNeil bring forward plans to buy a new bike that should bolster his Formula 600 title ambitions.
He said: “Victory in the division would be fantastic as it holds more exclusivity than the other challenges.”
Even without youth on his side, McNeil recognised how his racing days are limited, agonising that he “should really be aged 17 or 18” as “due to age it’s hard in the rookies”.
His spirited start is a great reward to the personal expense that road racing takes against those that compete.
McNeil is yet to earn sponsorship for his racing and is funding it off his own back.
