THOUSANDS of York City fans are heading to Wembley on Sunday, hoping to roar their heroes to glory.

The Minstermen take on Oxford United in the Blue Square Premier play-off final, aiming for a return to the Football League after six years in exile.

Club patron the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said it was an important game and he was confident City could win and gain promotion.

He said: “I want to wish York City all the best. This is a big match but I know they can do it! Come on York City! Come on Minstermen.”

A spokesman for the AA said that, as with any match, York City should “expect the unexpected” and leave plenty of time to travel to Wembley.

He said: “Sunday is normally one of the quieter days in terms of traffic, but it’s very much dependent on the weather.

“If it’s sunny there will be a lot of traffic; if it’s wet fewer people will be travelling. Basically drivers should expect the unexpected, and check traffic reports before they depart.”

Graham Smith from Trafficmaster, which provides the AA with their traffic updates, said fans travelling by car should be wary of several traffic hotspots on the roads to Wembley, even before they reach the M25.

He said: “The approach to the Hatfield Tunnel on the A1M between junctions four and two is affected by traffic restrictions due to refurbishment. This is leading to slow-moving traffic for two or three miles up to the tunnel,” he said.

“Drivers on the M1 will be affected by lane closures and traffic contraflows due to the road-widening works between junctions 13 to ten, from Milton Keynes to Luton. Also, if anyone tries to use the A421 to dodge the hold-ups on the A1, they’ll find there are major realignment works between Bedford and Milton Keynes before they hit the M1.”
