AN awards ceremony has been held to celebrate the efforts of student volunteers in York.
Representatives from the Higher York Partnership and more than 30 student volunteers attended the awards event, held as part of York’s Year of Volunteering.
Among the students receiving awards were Mike Wilson, currently studying for an engineering degree at York College, who has volunteered with the Elvington Scout Group as an assistant Scout leader.
John Wharton, Scout leader for the group, said Mike’s attitude was a good example.
He said: “He has helped organise and run weekly Scout meetings and has been invaluable at the six activity camps we hold each year.
“He is enthusiastic and sets a good example to the young people who he instructs and supervises.”
More than 1,500 students from across the city give up their time each year to raise funds or volunteer to help local groups.
Jessica Grant, director of Higher York, said: “This awards ceremony is an excellent way of recognising the positive and valuable contribution students make to the community of York.”
