SKATEBOARDERS in Selby have been leaping into action to get their well-worn facilities upgraded.

Carl Sandham, chairman of the newly-formed Selby Skate Park Committee, estimates that between £150,000 and £300,000 is needed to improve the five-year-old skate park at Abbey Leisure Centre, which is used almost every night by skateboarders aged between 13 and 30.

“We have realised the skate park facilities are getting slippy and old, with parts showing signs of wear and rust,” said 17-year-old Carl, who is training to be a plumber at York College.

“We feel that we need something new in order for people to progress their hobbies and riding skills.”

The committee has been in contact with skate park design company Maverick Industries, which specialises in making concrete skate parks, to obtain samples and costings for new facilities.

“We now need to raise the money and find a suitable location for the new skate park,” said Carl. “We have two ideas already for where the new facilities could go and would like to discuss them with people who are interested.”

The committee has arranged a meeting at 5pm on Wednesday, June 2, at Selby High School, to discuss the skate park, what has been done so far and how the idea can progress.

Anyone interested in attending the meeting is asked to email the committee at selbyskatepark@gmail.com.
