A LIFE-SAVING children’s unit at York Hospital has received a £1,700 donation from Scottish residents living in the city.

Members of York’s St Andrew Society raised the money over the past year by organising activities such as a coffee morning, plant sale, raffle and coconut shy.

The funds will be spent on new equipment for the Guardian Angels high dependency unit, which provides care for York’s sickest children.

The charity was chosen by the society’s president, Aileen Minns, whose disabled son, Andrew, spent a lot of time at York Hospital before his death 29 years ago at the age of just six.

Mrs Minns, who lives in Copmanthorpe, said: “Andrew had cerebral palsy and we received so much care from York Hospital. We just wanted to put something back.

“We’re really happy to have raised this much money. It’s been a great effort and I’m really grateful to everybody who has helped.”
