NOISY East Yorkshire residents who make life a misery for their neighbours are to be targeted by council officers.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s private sector housing team said it was now working with landlords and tenants of privately rented properties to clamp down on nuisance neighbours.

Sarah Horner, the council’s landlord liaison officer, said when reports of a nuisance neighbour were received, her department would speak to all parties to try to resolve the issue.

She said: “Unfortunately, some cases are not so easy to resolve and we are faced with persistently bad behaviour that makes life a misery for people living nearby.

“It’s in such cases that we would use the legal powers available to us and apply to the courts for a closure order.

“This means gathering evidence from neighbours, council officers or the police to show what a negative impact the problem is having on the local community. Closure orders can be used to prevent people from accessing commercial premises, as well as houses, flats, apartments, sheds and even car parks.”
