David Armstrong, of Virgin Media, gave a splendid description of the ideal opportunities available to companies to let their employees work from home using fast, secure internet communications (Office connections, Letters, May 14).
I believe Mr Armstrong is being a little simplistic in stating that in Yorkshire there’s plenty of bandwidth to go around. Living in a village only a couple of miles from the Dringhouses BT exchange, I find I am unable to achieve any significant speed in my internet download rates, and complaints to my internet provider are met with expressions of “this is typical for rural areas”. An engineer admitted there seemed little chance of any investment for low catchment villages.
I haven’t heard of any plans for Mr Armstrong’s company to put in any cable networks to serve us either, and I am sure there are many more villages “outside the ring road” that are not being considered for upgrade.
