York Knavesmire Harriers women started the York and District summer leagues series in good form at Pocklington.

The race on the undulating ten-kilometre course was won by Pocklington’s Helen Cross in 38 minutes and 33 seconds.

The Mire women, however, hold first team position after the opening race.

Caroline Warrington was second overall in 41.29, Emma Yates was first women’s 35 and third overall in 41.50.

Team-mate Andrea Lancaster, returning from injury, showed good form for a time of 42.20 while Rachael Lightfoot clocked 45.04.

Maureen Medlar led the super veteran class in a personal best 49.12 in women’s 55.

In the men’s race, which was won by York Acorn’s Mark Metcalfe in 34.42, Barry Atkinson clocked 36.47 and was first in men’s 50, Darren Hendley finished in 36.48, John Oliver 39.27, Terry Lightfoot 40.00, Peter Welsh 40.43 and Martin Smith 40.46.

The next race in the series is at Easingwold on May 25.

In the Ripon 10, Phil Elliot-Dick took third place in 58.00 and John Oliver was third in the men’s 50 in one hour, six minutes.

Sarah Nettelton (1:12.00) was third overall in the women’s race and first in women’s 45, with Medlar clocking 1:25.00.

York-based Lizzie Adams smashed the course record at Beverley in the 10k. Adams, who runs for Hallamshire, came home in 34.54.

Knavesmire times were: Tomas Edwards 34.42, Peter Welsh 40.17, Dave Scoresby 41.55, Hannah Cambell 52.29, Annabel Jelley 54.00 and Gill Waite 54.02.
