Selby/Drax Ladies had mixed fortunes in their final two matches of the season in division one of the York Badminton League.
They lost out 7-2 at home to a strong Clifton ‘A’ team for whom in-form Lucy Smith and Karen Brostel were outstanding in taking three straight wins for a total of 127-82.
However, when Selby visited Clifton ‘B’, they were good value for a 5-4 win. Michelle Hall and Lisa Ward were the difference for the visitors with an excellent maximum that brought a return of 144-92.
St John’s snatched a promotion place from ladies division two after a final match 8-1 win over Huntington.
Nikki Hainsworth and Claire Bird kept up their season-long good form for the campus side with another maximum for an excellent return of 126-57.
Bev Tebbutt and Angela Hobman picked up the consolation with a 15-21, 21-15, 21-10 success over Jaz and Rachel Crisp.
University Students ‘A’ ended their men’s division one season in third place after a 7-2 win over York RI Monday/Wednesday ‘A’ followed by a 6-3 victory at Riverside before a form-defying 9-0 defeat at RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘A’.
Tom Gatenby and Ricky Kanabar starred against the Monday/Wednesday ranks with three wins for 143-121, including a 21-19, 17-21, 21-18 success over the top Institute pair of Chris Hunt and Mark Harris.
Alex Fowler and Geoff Oxley grabbed all three Riverside wins for an excellent home return of 147-113 against the students.
Chris Wan and Harry Tan provided the impetus for the Tuesday/Thursday win with a season’s-best return of 126-55.
Selby/Drax ‘B’ visited St John’s in men’s two and were thoroughly beaten by a strong campus team.
Craig Middleton and Ian Waters were the pick of the home pairs once again and were never stretched in taking all three wins for 126-73.
Selby/Drax ‘B’ suffered a further reverse when they entertained rivals Selby Jubilee ‘A’ and lost 7-2.
James Dawson and Martin Overton took the best Jubilee return of 146-117, which included a tough 17-21, 21-13, 21-17 win over the top Selby/Drax pair of John Burnett and Naz Shesta.
Selby/Drax ‘B’ lost out 6-3 to University Students ‘C’ and then went down 8-1 against Huntington ‘A’ in their final home matches of their mixed three season.
Jenny Eyres and Tony Shetty starred for the campus ‘C’ team with three wins for 150-122, which included a tough 11-21, 25-23, 22-20 success over John Prickett and Sabira Shefta.
Mark Barker and Angela Hobman set the standard for Huntington against Selby with a season-ending maximum for a return of 144-110.
Fulfordgate ‘B’ entertained Pocklington in mixed four and went down 6-3 after several close games.
Jean Davison and Garry Hall took two wins for the home team but lost out to the top Pocklington pair of Derek Burt and Yvonne Burt, who won 17 and 15 to contribute to a total of 126-90.
