AN APPLE orchard planted at Tadcaster Grammar School will grow alongside the students who will look after it.
The 12 apple trees have been planted as part of the school’s sustainability initiative, in line with a national programme to encourage schools to grow and source their own food and cut down on waste.
“The orchard has grown from a seed of thought I had to make students more aware of food,” said teacher Maurice White. “It’s all about schools providing their own food and this scheme will see Tadcaster Grammar School’s Year Seven students looking after the trees and growing with them,” he said.
The orchard is just the beginning of a larger plan to plant more trees at the school in the future.
Each tree is a different species, from an old variety like the Isaac Newton apple to varieties from the 18th and 19th centuries.
