I saw in an article that City of York Council has spent £80,000 on pothole repair, and would like to warn them that they will probably have the same bill for the same potholes next year.

The reason is the repairs to the potholes are not being done properly and they will be undermined by frost in the winter.

I have often seen these potholes, which should be cut out and a solid base put in, just being filled and stamped on by the contractors, I think in the hope that traffic will compact the tarmac.

There seems to be little thought gone into making these repairs last. I spoke to a member of the council in February who said there was one month’s work to repair all the potholes, yet here we are in May and they have only just been completed.

The proof that this is the case, however, is a pothole on Appleton Road, between Copmanthorpe and Bishopthorpe, which has been done three times to my knowledge as each of the previous times it was not done properly.

Does the council not learn that contractors need to be told that if the repairs need doing again next year they will be responsible due to shoddy workmanship?

•A City of York Council spokeswoman said: “The wintry conditions experienced in December and January caused structural defects on a large number of roads within the York area.

“The council recognised the need to make the defects safe as soon as possible in order to maintain the safety of road users.

“A programme of contour patching was implemented in York, as in the majority of other authorities in the area.

“We have now stopped using contour patching and defects are being repaired using permanent techniques.
