SIMON Dyson’s return to the European Tour and his first round on English soil this year did not go well, though there was a little slice of North Yorkshire at the top of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
World number 68 Dyson finished two-over-par after the opening round of the showpiece European Tour event.
The York-born ace got off to a poor start on the remodelled Wentworth west course, dropping shots on the opening two holes.
The 32-year-old then bounced back brilliantly with birdies on four, seven and nine to put him under par for the outward half of his round. But Dyson’s doldrums returned with three more bogeys at 11, 14 and 17 to finish with a two-over-par 73.
Meanwhile, the lead was held by early starter Danny Willett, who is coached by Graham Walker at The Oaks Golf Club in Aughton.
Willett burned up the first nine holes of the course with five birdies and then birdied four of the last five to ease the pain of two dropped shots on the inward nine for a healthy six-under-par 65.
