GREAT fun can be had listening to this gipsy-punk outfit crash the gears on their border-hopping bus. The trouble is, once you get beyond the excellent starting off point of Pala Tute – which is a real rattling joy – all destinations seem too similar.
The multinational Gogol Bordello, led by the moustachioed Eugene Hutz, first met at a Russian wedding in Vermont in 1999 – a genesis amply reflected in their grab-everything style of global rant. Apparently, Gogol Bordello are very good live, which makes sense, but this big production number from Rick Rubin sounds a little too cleansed and smartened up.
Aside from that opener, best value lies in Sun Is On My Side and Immigraniada (We Comin’ Rougher), alongside puzzling lyrics such as, “We gonna build new kind of globalizer/Without a pantzer-foust or a shmiser”. No, me neither.
