A LATE winner from George Brown earned York Schoolboy Under-11s their first Yorkshire Cup triumph since the 1980s.
The Minster city boys beat Leeds 2-1 after a titanic battle in the final at York City’s Wigginton Road training ground.
It was a remarkable performance by York as they had been totally outplayed in the first half and went in a goal down.
York ’keeper Liam Powell was kept busy in a one-sided opening period and he was unable to prevent the visitors taking the lead.
York struggled to bring their own rikeforce of Casey Stewart and Brown into the game and Leeds should have gone further ahead.
However, York came out all guns blazing and turned in a determined second half performance.
Powell made an excellent save at the feet of a Leeds player in an early scare, but York started to dominate with Sam Drake controlling possession in midfield and full-backs Sam Fielding and Jarrad Benson moving into more advanced positions.
Midway through the half an excellent Fielding corner was met by Rhys Meredith, who slotted home from close range.
York surged forward in search of a winner and Brown bagged it with a composed finish with eight minutes remaining.
Coach Ian Hutchinson said: “I am delighted for the players, whose performances have warranted a trophy.”
York Schools FA will hold their annual presentation for all age groups at York Rugby Union Club in Shipton Road, on Friday, May 21, 7pm for a 7.15pm start. Players should wear Schools FA tracksuits.
