PRIMARY schools in East Yorkshire begin their attempt to win the Drax Cup 2010 on Thursday, May 27, in a cluster festival at Pocklington Cricket Club.
Barmby Moor CofE and Melbourne will be competing against Goole sides Snaith and Swinefleet for a place in the next round, with the ultimate aim a place in the area final.
Now in its fourth year, the Drax Cup is the biggest cricket competition for the under-9s age group in the country. This year, 350 schools and 3,500 boys and girls are taking part across Yorkshire.
The competition is sponsored by Drax Power Limited as part of its Cricket In The Community scheme, which provides cricket coaching to schools and is organised by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board and Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association.
The Drax Cup supports literacy programmes of the Department for Education by encouraging team members to write match reports to be read out in school.
Tickets for Yorkshire’s Twenty20 matches will be awarded as prizes for the best match reports.
Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale is an ambassador for the Drax Cup, the finals of which will be played at Headingley on Sunday, July 4, prior to Yorkshire v Warwickshire in the Friends Provident Twenty20 Cup.
