Heworth ARLC Under-18s lifted the Yorkshire League top four play-off trophy after beating Cottingham 40-12 in an enthralling final at Upton.

The game could have gone either way until 15 minutes from time when the Villagers, led by top performers Josh Bolam, Sam Colley, Tyler Craig, Oliver Cook and Callum Prenty, streaked clear.

Cottingham dominated early on, Heworth at one point defending six sets back to back.

But when they got out of their own half they opened the scoring, fast hands allowing winger Chris Chaplin to squeeze in at the corner. Haiden Barber goaled superbly.

Craig Richardson soon raced in after an audacious dummy following good off-loads by Tom Hirst and Jake Ripley, Prenty goaling.

Cottingham scored a converted try but Heworth hit back as smart hands by Colley saw hooker Craig go under the sticks, his brother, Dan, converting.

Cottingham replied from a long kick downfield, out-sprinting the Heworth defence to make it 18-12 at half-time.

But the York side took greater control thereafter, stringing long spells of attack together which resulted in loose-forward Barber crossing and converting.

Centre Ben Stoker scored after his own powerful run had set up position, before captain Bolam came on a nice line to power through, Barber goaling.

Man-of-the-match Bolam then set up Craig to seal the win late on, Barber completing the scoring with the extras.

York Acorn U11s came from behind to beat a big and fast Doncaster Toll Bar 32-26 late on.

Acorn only realised they had a game on their hands after Doncaster built a comfortable lead, helped by some poor tackling, But they battled back and good open rugby brought them victory with two quick tries in the last five minutes.

Man-of-the-match Jack Wyard got a hat-trick, with fellow top performer Reece Maynard (2), Dalton Brolly and top tackler Thomas Atkin also crossing. Max Sharpley and Atkin added goals. The coaches’ player of they day was Jacob Sanderson.
