SHOPPERS in York city centre witnessed angelic beings descend from the North East into their midst.
The angels were performers from Durham Gala Theatre’s contemporary take on the Mystery Plays, and had come to swap notes with the more traditionally-dressed angels of York’s Mystery Plays. Unlike York, Durham does not have an original medieval manuscript of its Mystery Plays.
York’s Mystery Plays are performed on wagons every four years, and Durham’s every three. So after this year, they will not be performed at the same time for another 12 years. York’s Mystery Plays will take place on July 11 and 18, while Durham’s will be performed on May 27 to 29.
