MOTORISTS have been left confused after a road was closed without any work taking place – while two councils argued over who was responsible. York Lane in Strensall has been shut for more than two weeks, causing a headache for drivers and neighbouring York Golf Club.

The minor road, between the level crossing in Common Road and Cross Lane, was shut because a damaged culvert was in danger of collapsing.

But talks between the City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council about the boundary meant work has not started.

Now North Yorkshire County Council has announced it will start the work, which will take four weeks, on June 1.

Meanwhile, drivers using the road to avoid the busy stretch of the A64 between Hopgrove roundabout and Flaxton have been left scratching their heads, as have officials at York Golf Club.

Manager Mike Wells said: “It is a well-known rat-run for people avoiding the A64, but anyone who gets to that point gets lost. The signage only appears halfway across the common, where there’s very little space for turning. It’s inefficient and very poorly sign-posted.”

He added: “I’ve lost track of the number of people I’ve seen parked up outside the club and I’ve been out and given directions to them.”

He said although people could still get to the golf club, he had to phone potential visitors to explain the situation to them.

“People still need to get here and we were late getting started with a senior competition the other day,” he said.

He said he had received notice that City of York Council would be resurfacing Moor Lane on June 3 and 4, adding to the disruption.

Elaine Williams, a spokeswoman for North Yorkshire County Council, said: “There has been some discussion about the boundary and about this culvert. The county council is going to start the work and repair it starting on June 1.”
