David Brinklow (chairman, Yorkshire Architectural and York Archaeological Society) is absolutely right when he states that it should be possible to retain what remains of the original station roof in its existing location. Its proposed re-erection as a bicycle shed is not appropriate and the perspective illustrating this does not offer much comfort; the columns have lost their lotus leaf capitals and trees appear to be growing under a glazed roof with their branches obscuring and interfering with the ironwork.
A study of the plans shows that the proposed relevant ground-floor area is to be a café and an open office; both could fit suitably below the original roof. This would result in an arrangement very similar to that at the Bar Convent, also, incidentally, designed by the same architect, G T Andrews.
The floor space above could be moved to the south and take the footprint of the erstwhile bicycle shed, particularly if the proposed hotel is either abandoned or significantly modified.
