IT was reported in The Press that the head of city strategy was forming a committee to address the problems with the Tea Room Square at the railway station.

I think this is a very poor attempt at an apology for getting it wrong, as we at the station have had to endure the council’s cock-up for the past three years.

It wasn’t rocket science what would happen when you allowed traffic to enter Tea Room Square from the main road and the latter is just used as a pick-up-point for all and sundry, causing havoc and gridlock round the station.

It is not acceptable that East Coast are trying to improve their service to get visitors to York and they have a wait for a taxi due to the traffic management of the square.

I would like to invite this committee down to the station on a Friday afternoon to see the problems first-hand.

In the meantime, I would like to suggest putting the No Entry signs back up to the square and, when appropriate, allow taxis to turn right out of the station.

If that sounds a bit familiar, it is; that’s how it was before they messed it up.

• Richard Wood, assistant director in city strategy at City of York Council, said: “The council is aware of the congestion problems and is currently reviewing the operation of Tea Room Square to see if any improvements can be made.

“The current layout was developed with the help of rail organisations, to improve access for commuters and businesses that use the square and station.

“One of the key problems is the volume of traffic using the short-stay car park at the back of Tea Room Square, so this will be one of the subjects discussed with East Coast.

“No change can be made until these discussions have been concluded.”
