The city’s new MP for York Outer displays a lack of decisiveness, and so early in his tenure too.

No doubt local opponents of the Derwenthorpe development were delighted to welcome him on a tour of the site, but quite what conclusion they drew from it is anyone’s guess.

Mr Sturdy says the proposed development requires a “long, hard look”, indicating he has not decided whether he agrees or disagrees with it going forward. Meanwhile, local parish council chairman Mark Warters is encouraged by the MP’s willingness to stick to his manifesto promise to fight for York’s green belt. An interesting interpretation of the MP’s position, and, I would say, completely premature.

Once Mr Sturdy has taken a long hard look at the situation, I’m sure local people will be interested to learn what his position is on Derwenthorpe.

The scheme is critical to the delivery of much-needed housing in this city and in giving hundreds of people who need a decent place to live.

Even green belt “saviours” the Lib Dems agree the development is needed.

Perhaps this is one unusual instance where the two parties will not be wedded together.
