THE ARCHBISHOP of York, Dr John Sentamu, led a special service to mark the 150th anniversary of St John the Evangelist Church in Welburn.

The anniversary celebrations will continue when ten gardens throughout Welburn will be open on May 30 and 31.

Helen Stansfield, organiser of the open gardens, said it was only the second time that the “fascinating, hidden gardens” would open to the public.

The gardens will be open from 1pm to 5pm on both days and entry costs £4 for adults.

Peter Brown, parochial church council secretary, described the church as “very much at the heart of the village”. The proceeds of the event will be used to support its work.
