GLORIOUS sunshine looks set to greet race-goers for the first Saturday of the season at York’s Knavesmire.

Forecasters are predicting temperatures of 25C at the one-day meeting. Leading jockey Frankie Dettori will be making an appearance and a number of horses set to compete in the big race at Royal Ascot this year will be on show.

As families across York and North Yorkshire make the most of the heatwave by holding barbecues this weekend, the Royal Society For Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has issued guidelines for enjoying a safe meal.

Last year, 1,800 people had to go to hospital after being injured at barbecues.

The guidelines are:

•Make sure the barbeque is in good condition, stable and stands on level ground away from anything flammable

•Never light a barbeque in an enclosed space or use accelerants, and use long-handled tools •Children should never be left unsupervised around the barbeque

•Make sure the barbeque is fully extinguished after use and never touch the barbeque until it has had time to fully cool.
