A DAMAGED bridge near York is to close for repairs for six weeks from next month.
Sutton Bridge, on the B1228 between Elvington and Sutton-upon-Derwent, closed for four weeks after being damaged by a lorry last January.
It was reopened to cars and light vehicles and subject to 10mph speed limits in February, but a meeting of Elvington Parish Council last week announced that the bridge would close on June 14 for major repairs.
Tom Fitzpatrick runs the Elvington Village Store, and said trade dropped every time the bridge closed.
He said he will extend opening hours to 6am to 9pm, seven days a week, during the disruption, and was happy to make free deliveries to the local community.
Mike Ball, principal engineer with East Yorkshire council, said scaffolding would be put up around the bridge from Tuesday, June 1, before it was closed to vehicles on Monday, June 14.
