No wonder we are a nation of fatties! William Dixon Smith’s classic sandwich recipe of ham, beef, chicken or some other previously winged creature would pile on the pounds (Why food is never just a filler, Soapbox, May 20).
Just what is a previously winged creature? Bat? Wasp ? Flying Fish? Or does he mean wounded, ie shot?
Neat juxtapositioning too, with the World Cancer Research Fund exhortation to eat a healthy diet just below. However, I have to doubt WDS’s assertion that the Earl of Sandwich aped his coachman. He probably never even noticed him, a mere servant. I know for a fact that the sandwich was invented by the Scandinavian/Irish chef O’Pensarney.
