ONE of the top honours in the world of science has been bestowed on two researchers from the University of York.
Professor Robin Perutz and Professor Gideon Davies, from the university’s Department of Chemistry, have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society.
The honour is recognised worldwide as a sign of the highest regard in science.
Candidates must be proposed by at least two existing Fellows and are assessed by committees in each major field of science Prof Davies, whose research focuses on structural enzymology and sugar chemistry, said: “This is a wonderful surprise and a great honour. It has been a privilege to work in the Chemistry Department in York with a team of very talented researchers.”
Professor Perutz was recognised for his research into organometallics, reaction mechanisms and spectroscopy.
He said: “This is a great day for York chemistry and especially for all those who I have worked with. I have always had hugely supportive colleagues and a very talented research group.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Cantor, described the pair as “outstanding scientists”.
