We see the coalition government gently moving into soundbite land with references to a “people’s society”, one where unpopular laws are repealed, etc. On the face of it, if you’re busy, you might say “good idea”.

Yet you may not have been thinking of or even remembering John Major’s Citizen’s Charter back in 1991-92. Very many thick colour brochure booklets were produced; many went on display, but few indeed were taken away, and most went for pulping.

What I am trying to suggest is that a lot is said to sound good, but the content has no real gravitas in everyday life, and I am sure I am not the only person in a people’s society that believes a rather smart trendy elite are running the country, people who do not represent the everyday concerns of us.
